Guide to Video Conferencing


Zoom and Skype, being the most common video conferencing apps around at the moment, are available on the desktops. Vidyo is still being used for some meetings (though it is being phased out in preference for Zoom) and for that, please use the browser client. The Linux client for Vidyo has been deprecated for some time and so the browser will give you the best experience. Note that you will need to 'Allow' Vidyo to access your microphone/web cam for this to work.


We have a number of headsets (both jack and USB connections) as well as more limited numbers of web cams available for loan. Just ask Mark Slater to request them. If you have finished using them regularly though, please return them! We also have a single USB speakerphone available for short term loan that can be used for small group meetings. Finally, there is a dedicated conference laptop that can be used on the wired network in both Physics West and Poynting to avoid relying on the wireless network and a small projector that can be used in rooms that don't have one.

Dedicated Meeting Rooms

We have several dedicated meeting rooms available that are equipped with Windows PCs, mics, webcams and projectors: W229 (booking sheet on wall), W123a and E320 (both booked through the TSO). In addition the Terminal Room (W330) has a projector as well.

Holding Meetings in LRAT Controlled Rooms

It is possible to have Video Conferencing meetings held in the larger lecture and seminar rooms on campus. The web cam and USB speakerphone will both plug in to these machines and be recognised. You can then access your meetings through the installed apps or browser versions and just select the appropriate devices. I would highly recommend using the USB speakerphone at least for the mic/speaker as this has built in echo cancellation which you wouldn't get using the mics and speakers provided in the rooms. If you are in one of the larger lecture theatres, additional speakers and a radio mic system are also available to aid remote participation.
