UOBwifi Wireless networking
File uobwifi: this update 20110121. Part of Guide to the Local System. An authenticated wireless network is provided by infrastructure under the control of our Information Services on campus.
Before using, you are strongly advised to ensure that your wireless-card driver is up to date. This advice applies even if you successfully use wireless elsewhere. It is not always sufficient to use Windows Update: some manufacturers (eg Dell) have more recent drivers on their web-site.
In the School of Physics, there are various access points around buildings. There is one located in the 2nd floor Meeting Room (229), and two on the 3rd floor. Let me know if you have trouble connecting because of weak signal.
Access to the Birmingham wireless network requires the userid and password you were provided with by the University adminstration and IT Services, often called your ADF userid and password, as you may already use for access to MyBham and central IT Services email. This may well be different to the userid and password you have on the local PP system. Network connections are firewalled and NATed and all wireless connections come from a single IP subnet within the Birmingham campus class B network.

For Windows, this documentation should be followed through carefully. You must get the Birmingham root certificate on the laptop. Use the same laptop account you intend to use normally. You should then configure the UOBwifi network onto your laptop. This network uses WPA/TKIP/PEAP/EAP-MSCHAPv2. Userid and password and domain information corresponds to your University of Birmingham ADF account information. Visit the helpdesk in the library if in doubt.
You will find there is also a UOBGUEST network ID. This is only really for visitor use by prior arrangement (see other pages in our local guide for further information). You may also see the old UOBWLAN network, which is being phased out (2010).
There is also a EDUROAM network ID. This is intended for members of other universities visiting Birmingham, where those universities have opted-in to the EDUROAM wireless service. It allows such visitors to authenticate using their home university credentials. You should be able to do the same when you are visiting other opted-in universities.
Connecting from Linux
For a recent Linux version, eg Fedora 14, the following applies.Find the wireless icon on your panel or system settings. For example, for XFCE, there is a network icon on the panel. If wireless nothing is currently connected, this will show a small x. Click the icon, and choose Wireless Networks, and then you should see uobwifi, so choose that.
Ensure you have these settings:
- Wireless security: WPA and WPA2 Enterprise
- Authentication: change to PEAP
- Anonymous identity: leave empty
- CA certificate: leave as (None) or supply the cert filename.
- PEAP version: leave as Automatic
- Inner Authentication: MSCHAPv2
- Username and password: use your Uni authentication
