Particle Physics Seminar

Date: Wednesday 9th November 2005

Title: Collider Physics and Parton Distributions

Speaker: Dr Robert Thorne (Cambridge)

Abstract

I present an up-to-date summary of our knowledge of the parton distributions of the proton and their importance for the physics of experiments such as HERA the Tevatron and the LHC. I will concentrate on the uncertainties on partons, and the implications of this uncertainty. I will also discuss particular recent developments involving, for example, QED corrections and isospin violation, heavy flavour production and a survey of a possible measurement of the longitudinal structure function at HERA.

This Particle Physics Seminar will take place in Seminar Room 1 (room 103), Physics West, at 1315. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served at 1300.
