Title: Online Tracking for the Trigger of ATLAS

Speaker: Dr Nikos Konstantinidis (UCL)

Abstract
Track reconstruction will have a central role in event selection at the second level trigger of ATLAS, but the strict time constraints and the harsh conditions at the LHC make it a very challenging task. After an overview of the ATLAS trigger strategy, I will concentrate on the tracking needs at Level-2 and will describe a set of pattern recognition algorithms designed for fast track reconstruction. These algorithms satisfy all Level-2 requirements in ATLAS and their general philosophy can be applicable to all multi-collision hadronic environments. An important use of online tracking is for b-jet identification. I will discuss the impact of online b-tagging capabilities on the ATLAS physics potential and to what extend the LEP b-tagging knowledge can be of use at the LHC.

Particle Physics Seminars take place in room 103, Physics West, on Wednesdays at 1315, unless listed otherwise. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served at 1300.
