Top Cross Section (Current status and early LHC prospects)

Neil Collins (Birmingham)

Abstract

Since the top quark was discovered at the TeVatron in 1995, detailed measurements of the total production cross section have been made by the CDF and D0 experiments. With the start of LHC high energy data taking, the future for top quark measurements will move to CERN. This talk will briefly cover the current state of top cross section measurements at the TeVatron before showing the current expectations for the first data gathered by the ATLAS detector. This will include why taus produced in top decays are of interest and show work that has been done in this area on triggering and selection.
