The Covalent Bond in Particle Spectroscopy

David Bugg (QMUL)

Abstract

Many resonances are attracted to thresholds and the reason is quite transparent. This implies that resonances are not pure q-qbar or 3q: they necessarily contain a long range component related to decays and meson exchanges. The mechanism is formally identical to the covalent bond in Chemistry. It suggests reasons why only SU(3) octets, Decuplets and singlets exist, not higher representations.
