Abstract
I will review some of the physics motivations for upgrading the LHC to
provide an order of magnitude increase in integrated luminosity. The talk
will then look briefly at the LHC machine upgrades to achieve this. The main
part of the talk will focus on the required upgrades for the tracking
detector. The challenges for the new tracker will be discussed and then the
proposed solutions will be reviewed with a focus on the strip tracker. As
well as looking at individual components, some of the interesting system
issue will be considered.
