Observation of an excess of events in the Search for the Higgs Boson with ATLAS at the LHC

Kostas Nikolopoulos(Birmingham University)

Abstract

The updated search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions with the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The searches in the decay channels H->γγ, H->ZZ->4l and H->WW->lvlv have been improved and updated for the complete available dataset, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 4.8/fb collected at sqrt(s)= 7 TeV in 2011 and about 5.8/fb at sqrt(s)= 8 TeV in 2012. An excess of events, consistent with the production of a narrow resonance with a mass of about 126 GeV, is observed and its statistical significance is discussed.
