Depleted Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors

Eva Vilella-Figueras (Liverpool University)

Abstract

Depleted Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (DMAPS), also known as depleted CMOS sensors, are position sensitive detectors in commercially available High Voltage-CMOS (HV-CMOS) or High Resistivity-CMOS (HR-CMOS) processes. These sensors are extremely attractive for experiments in particle physics, as they integrate the sensing element and the readout chip in a single layer of silicon, while providing fast charge collection and high radiation tolerance. DMAPS have been adopted as the sensor technology for the pixel tracker of the Mu3e experiment and are under consideration for several other experiments. This talk reviews the working principle of these sensors, describes the state-of-the-art of current developments for particular experiments in particle physics and presents specific research work done by the CERN-RD50 collaboration to further develop their performance.
