Graviton-Photon Mixing and Future Laboratory Axion Searches

Aldo Ejlli (Cardiff University)

Abstract

We present experimental upper limits for ultra-high-frequency stochastic gravitational waves obtained using data from experiments that search for axion-like particles like ALPS, OSQAR and CAST. Applying the assumptions of graviton to photon conversion in a static magnetic field, we exclude a stochastic gravitational waves background in the frequency bands (2.7 - 14) 10^(14) Hz and (5 - 12) 10^(17) Hz with a characteristic amplitude of h approx 6 10^(-26) and h approx 5 10^(-28) at 95% confidence level, respectively. This principle applies to all experiments of this kind, with prospects of constraining (or detecting), for example, stochastic gravitational waves background from light primordial black hole evaporation in the early universe.
